Ross & Russell’s tropical oceanfront wedding in the heart of Waikiki

Some weddings are purely about the couple. Others are about bringing together a global community to celebrate love. Ross and Russell’s celebration at The Royal Hawaiian managed to be both, an intimate exchange of vows against the iconic backdrop of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, followed by an exuberant reception where friends from around the world gathered to toast, dance, and revel in the joy of two people finding each other.

A Love Story That Took Flight

Ross, a pilot whose work takes him across continents, and Russell, an anesthesiologist grounded in precision and care, met through mutual friends. Their story is one of those serendipitous connections that feels both unexpected and inevitable, two professionals whose demanding careers could have kept them perpetually ships passing in the night, instead finding in each other a home base, a constant, a partnership that transcends geography.

For their wedding, they chose The Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki, that iconic pink palace on the beach where old Hollywood glamour meets tropical paradise. It was the perfect setting for a couple who wanted to honor Hawaii’s beauty while creating a celebration that felt unmistakably theirs.

The Vision: Tropical Color Meets Oceanfront Elegance

Ross and Russell’s design direction was clear: brilliant tropical florals, bold color, and the natural drama of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head as their backdrop. They weren’t interested in muted, understated elegance. They wanted their wedding to feel alive, joyful, exuberant, a reflection of their relationship and the celebration they were creating.

The result was stunning. Ceremony arrangements exploded with color, fuchsia Phalaenopsis orchids, birds of paradise, anthuriums, tropical greenery, and orchids in shades of pink, coral, and white. Against the brilliant blue of the Pacific and the green of Diamond Head in the distance, the effect was pure Hawaii at its most glamorous.

The Royal Hawaiian: Where History Meets Paradise

As a photographer who has worked at many Oahu venues, I have deep affection for The Royal Hawaiian. There’s magic at this property, Opening on February 1, 1927, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel is known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” is a historic, Spanish-Moorish style landmark on azure waters of Waikiki beach and a view of Diamond Head, the Ocean Lawn provides one of Waikiki’s most spectacular ceremony settings.

For Ross and Russell’s ocean lawn ceremony, timing was everything. They planned for late afternoon when the light would be soft and directional, illuminating faces beautifully while avoiding the harsh overhead sun that can make outdoor Hawaii ceremonies challenging. The positioning was perfect, guests faced Diamond Head, while the couple exchanged vows with the Pacific stretching endlessly behind them.

A Ceremony Filled with Joy

The ceremony itself was everything a Hawaiian wedding should be: deeply personal, visually spectacular, and infused with genuine emotion. Ross and Russell stood beneath that dramatic floral arch, Diamond Head rising in the distance, surrounded by the people whom they love and were honored to support their friends in marriage. There was one more special guest, Bentley, their dog who was a rock star walking down the aisle. (P.S. I love when couples can include their furry friends and Hawaii now has many pet-friendly properties and leaner rules for traveling with your pet).

What struck me most was the atmosphere, warm and celebratory. You could feel the support radiating from their guests, the joy that comes from watching two people who clearly belong together make it official. The kiss at the end of the ceremony? Pure elation, followed by cheers and the kind of spontaneous celebration that makes me grateful to do this work.

Portraits in Paradise

Luxury Hawaii wedding

One of the privileges of photographing at The Royal Hawaiian is the variety of backdrops available within steps of each other. For Ross and Russell’s portrait session, we made use of the property’s iconic architecture, the gorgeous pink facade lanai with the iconic “Royal Hawaiian” logo, the Moorish archways, the lush tropical landscaping.

Because they wanted to do portraits before their ceremony, we kept them to the coconut grove, that was were able to use available light and open shade to keep everyone cool and in one place. We captured both polished, composed portraits and candid moments of connection. The images where they’re simply looking at each other, laughing together? Those are always my favorites.

The Monarch Room: Where the World Came Together

Royal Hawaiian wedding photographer, monarch room wedding reception

For the reception, we moved inside to the legendary Monarch Room, and the transformation was spectacular. The design team had created an atmosphere that felt both elegant and festive, those incredible Moroccan-inspired chandeliers casting warm amber light, tropical floral arrangements bringing the outside in, and table settings that balanced formality with celebration. I loved that they used vintage postcards from Hawaii for their table numbers. Elegant and functional.

What made this reception special wasn’t just the setting, it was the people. Friends had traveled from across the United States, Asia, Europe, and beyond to celebrate Ross and Russell. The toasts reflected years of friendship, shared adventures, and genuine love for this couple. The dancing was uninhibited and joyful. The energy in that room was infectious, even I was dancing the night away…yes, while still photographing.

This is what I love about photographing weddings at venues like The Royal Hawaiian. The setting provides the structure, the elegance, the beauty, the carefully curated atmosphere, while the couple and their community provide the soul. Ross and Russell filled that historic space with laughter, love, and the kind of celebration that makes you remember why weddings matter.

Photographing Love in All Its Forms

As a wedding photographer, I’m honored to document love stories of all kinds. Ross and Russell’s celebration was a reminder that at their core, all weddings are about the same thing: two people choosing each other, their community gathering to support them, and the creation of new family bonds that will last a lifetime.

Their Royal Hawaiian wedding had all the elements that make Hawaii celebrations extraordinary, dramatic natural beauty, vibrant tropical design, that perfect Hawaii light, and the kind of genuine joy that transcends any single moment. My job was simply to be present, to anticipate those fleeting expressions and connections, and to document both the grand gestures and the quiet glances that tell the real story.

The Details That Elevated Everything

Beyond the big moments, it was the thoughtful details that made this wedding distinctive. The vibrant tropical florals that appeared throughout the wedding celebration, from the ceremony installations to reception centerpieces. The way traditional Hawaiian elements like maile leis honored the location while the overall design felt modern and bold. The careful attention to creating an atmosphere that felt simultaneously elegant and celebratory.

These details aren’t accidents. They’re the result of couples who understand their vision and work with talented teams to execute it flawlessly to create an experience and vibe for the day. Every element, from the ceremony timing to capture the best light, to the reception flow that kept energy high throughout the evening, was thoughtfully considered.

Why The Royal Hawaiian Remains Iconic

Royal Hawaiian wedding photographer, Luxury Hawaii wedding

Having photographed numerous weddings at The Royal Hawaiian, I can speak to why this venue continues to be a top choice for Oahu couples. The location is unparalleled being right in the heart of Waikiki, with direct beach access and those iconic Diamond Head views. The service is exceptional a team that understands how to execute complex events while making it all appear effortless. The versatility is second to none, from intimate oceanfront ceremonies to grand receptions in the Monarch Room, the property can accommodate celebrations of vastly different scales and styles.

For Ross and Russell, who wanted their wedding to feel both intimate and grand, traditional and modern, elegantly Hawaiian and vibrantly tropical, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel provided the perfect canvas.

Light, Color, and Composition

From a photography perspective, this wedding offered everything I look for. The late afternoon ceremony provided that soft, directional light that makes outdoor portraits luminous. The tropical florals against ocean blues created bold, saturated color that photographs beautifully on both film and digital. The architectural elements from those Moorish arches, the pink facade, leading out to the cocnut grove and ocean lawn the elegant Monarch Room, provided structure and visual interest.

I approached this wedding with my signature hybrid film and digital workflow. The digital images capture crisp detail and vibrant color, perfect for showcasing the floral design and the energy of the reception. The film images bring a softer, more romantic quality, ideal for intimate portraits and those quiet in-between moments that define a wedding day’s emotional arc.

For Couples Planning Royal Hawaiian Weddings

If you’re considering The Royal Hawaiian for your Waikiki wedding, here’s what you should know:

The ocean lawn ceremony space is spectacular, but timing matters. Late afternoon provides the best light, soft and flattering rather than harsh overhead sun. The backdrop of Diamond Head and the Pacific is unmatched in Waikiki. Note that it is a public space and as much as the hotel will try to keep on lookers away, it is a possibility you will have strangers looking on. Some couples will choose to face the hotel instead or opt for the Coconut grove to exchange vows.

The Monarch Room is truly special, the chandeliers alone create the space, the vastness being able to host from 50 -250 guests, the stage and atmosphere. It photographs beautifully and creates an elegant setting for receptions large and small.

Work with the venue’s experienced team on timing and logistics. They understand how to make complex events flow seamlessly, which matters enormously on a wedding day. And have a team of planners for you to choose from making all your decisions easier and stress free.

Embrace elegant design. The Royal Hawaiian’s pink palette and tropical setting can handle vibrant florals and bold color choices. Don’t be afraid to lean into the glamour that makes Hawaii weddings distinctive.

Plan for portraits throughout the property. The variety of backdrops, beach, veranda, the gardens, means you can create diverse images without leaving the venue.

A Final Reflection

Ross and Russell’s Royal Hawaiian wedding exemplified what I love most about photographing Hawaii celebrations. The natural beauty provides an extraordinary backdrop, but it’s the human elements that matter such as love, joy, community and ,celebration that make weddings meaningful.

Watching Ross and Russell exchange vows with Diamond Head rising behind them (and perhaps a few surfers in the background too), documenting their joy as they celebrated with friends from around the world, capturing those quiet moments of connection amidst the grand celebration this is the work I’m honored to do.

For couples planning destination weddings in Hawaii, your celebration is an opportunity to bring together the people you love in one of the world’s most beautiful places. When you choose a venue like The Royal Hawaiian, thoughtfully design your aesthetic, and trust your photographer to document both the grand moments and the intimate details, you create not just a wedding day but a lasting memory for everyone who shares it with you.
