Gin GIn and Ryan were Wed at the Hale Koa Hotel on the edge of Waikiki which offers a beautiful garden setting. Gin Gin had family visiting from the Philippines making part family reunion. Alice Inoue performed the ceremony, she’s always inspiring to hear. Ali and I had fun and were blessed to be part of Gin Gin and Ryan’s special day.

Sometimes I’ll be asked to go out to the rehearsal which is a fantastic opportunity to meet the bridal party and family members. This way I’m not just the obnoxious photographer showing up the day of the wedding with a camera pointed in everyones face.

Location Scouting: North Shore

People always ask why photography cost what it does. One of the reasons is we scout out locations for photographing unique and dramatic places to have your images as unique as you are. I have had many brides ask me about the water fall images posted here a while ago and it’s become quite a popular location. It’s not for everyone but, I love going there and would never have found it if I wasn’t out and about hiking one day.

Here is an image from one of those shoots.

Last week Frank Robinson of Island Events and I went on such a quest to scout some locales we want to photograph for test images. Again when booking your special day, we can only describe a place so much and we feel images speak a for themselves. So off we went to the North Shore on Oahu looking for some unique spots for our photoshoot. Below is video and some images I took that day for reference (if you’re interested in the private estate, please contact me or Frank).

Trisha & Todd ~ engagement session

One of the wonderful things about living in Hawaii is the vast selections of locations in which to shoot. When we’re looking for a quite, romantic I love heading up to the North Shore to take advantage of the beaches and scenery there without the distractions that somewhere like Waikiki can have. Love Waikiki don’t get me wrong, just sometimes it’s just too many people there!
We met up with Trisha and Todd around sunset. One thing I always do during consultation is discuss outfits that they will wear to make sure they’re going to match and not clash, bring back up etc. At one point during our conversation, Trisha seemed hesitant and I asked her if she had any concerns, her answer was more of a request. See Todd is a huge Lakers fan and had his heart set on having a few images of them together with Laker jersey’s on. I thought it was too cute and of course I was a wiling partner.

I love a North Shore sunset wedding on the beach. It always has a beautiful backdrop for of scenery and light for creating dramatic images. My assistant Nicole and I met up with Robyn & Lyn who were visiting from the mainland and decided to tie the knot here in Hawai’i Nei. Kalona from A Rainbow in Paradise who officiated is always wonderful to work with and check out her site for fabulous options for getting married here.

A Great Mother’s Day Gift

I got the call for a last minute portrait session from David. He wanted something special for his wife for mother’s day this year and when the idea was to surprise her with images of him and his two daughters I was delighted! After comparing out calendars we figured out the only day that would work was the Friday before Mother’s day. So we met up out at Sandy’s Beach on a beautiful day and I was able to deliver a few prints for him on Saturday. David was psyched that he was able to have such a memorable keep-sake to give his wife. enjoy!

Christina & Justin ~ Hawaii Beach Wedding

I love the intimacy of a small beach wedding, where family gathers around to be a part of the ceremony. I met up with Christina & Jason at Waimanalo Beach. A favorite of mine with its white sand and beautiful clear sea-foam green – azure blue water, makes it a wonderful place to photograph at.

The ceremony was performed by family friend, Kalona from A Rainbow in Paradise. I love her laid back style and along with she delivers her inspiring ceremony, I can always feel the Aloha Spirit.

Emily & Max: The Twitter Proposal (Twitter History)

You may not know but, the Library of Congress will be archiving every Tweet since it starting in March of 2006. I found this quite facinating since there are about 50 billion tweets out there and I send out my fair share.

On to my part in history… Unsuspecting little ‘ol me, last spring received a “Direct Message ” (a private email through Twitter) from two of my followers; @marcorbito & @scrivrner, mentioning that a couple recently announced their engagement on Twitter. They also sent out the “tweet” that they wanted to use vendors they found through Twitter. I clearly remember because I was on my way to Little Oven for some late night dessert which is the informal tweet-up local here in Honolulu. I say unsuspecting, because I had no clue I’d be a part of Twitter history!

This past Friday, I received a phone call from MSNBC.com and had to listen to the message three times to make sure I heard the message right! I couldn’t believe the it, they were asking permission to use one of my images from Emily & Max’s Wedding here in Hawaii. I have to admit it’s not as earth shattering as the elections in Iran where we all changed our avatars to green in solidarity or the breaking news story about the “Miracle on the Hudson” but I’m honored just the same.

Cynthia & Coach 2.14.2010

I receive inquires everyday from people who wish to get married here on Hawai’i. When the inquiry came in from Cynthia about how she and her husband wanted to renew their vows on the beach for Valentine’s day, I knew it was going to be a special one. Cynthia had wanted a beach wedding 35 years ago when she was first wed to Matthew (aka Coach) and not being able to now was the right time to gather the family together in Hawai’i Nei for this special occasion. Being able to share this moment with her close knit family, you can see that I was quite honored.

It was a beautiful afternoon on the beach at Kahala. We went to the perfect spot under a few palm trees.

Audrey & Daniel

I drove to the west side of Oahu on a gorgeous New Year’s day to meet up with Audrey and Daniel for their sunset wedding. I usually photograph beach weddings which are a favorite of mine since coming from the east coast and mainly photographing in churches or reception venues has been a nice change.
